Professor Long has been an active member of the Babar Collaboration
since 1997. The Babar experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator
Center is dedicated to the study of CP violation in B meson decays.
The measurement of sin(2 beta), the CP asymmetry in the decay B0 -->
J/psi Ks, was the first precision test of the Kobayashi-Maskawa
mechanism for CP violation. Prof. Long played a central role in the
measurement of sin(2 beta) as one of the primary analysts and as
working group co-convener. He also recently investigated the
feasibility of determining gamma, another Unitarity Triangle angle,
from direct CP violation in B --> D K decays.
Prof. Long is now interested in using rare charmless B decays in the
enormous Babar dataset to look for physics beyond the Standard Model.
Corrections from loop diagrams containing virtual particles at high
mass scales can lead to significant deviations in the measured CP
asymmetries with respect to the precise predictions of the Standard
Model. A significant discrepancy would be the "smoking gun" telling
us that the Standard Model of particle physics is incomplete.
